The National Association of Seadogs,
also called Pirates Confraternity, has donated a 4,000-gallon motorized
water borehole to Umueze in Ezenomi, Uzoagba in Ikeduru Local Government
Area of Imo State,
The group also refurbished Uzoagba
Secondary School, Uzoagba Library and offered free medical treatment to
the people of the area.
The social works were said to have been
done in the area in recognition of Mr. Ralph Opara’s lifetime
achievement. Opara, (also called Captain Kid), who was born in 1933, was
one among six other young men that in 1953 took a decision to form
Pirates Confraternity.
Speaking during the commissioning, the
National President of NAS, Ifeanyi Onochie, said the association in 2015
set aside the Opara’s annual memorial lecture to endow his community
with direct and impactful benefit from his legacy, long after he had
passed on.
The National Capoon said the water
project tagged, ‘Ralph Opara Memorial Community Water Scheme’ would go a
long way to improve sanitation, hygiene and overall health condition of
the people of the community and its environs.
He said, “It will also cement the legacy
of selfless service and brotherhood of our late father, brother and
friend, Mr.Ralph Chukwuemeka Opara.”
Onochie called for the judicious use of the facilities and warned against any form of discrimination in the use of the water.
“The best form of gratitude NAS/PC
usually appreciates from the beneficiaries of its community cause
projects is the undertaking that such projects would be put to judicious
use and appreciates maintenance culture cultivated and applied to
ensure longevity in usage for the benefit of a greater population of the
community.
“And may no one be discriminated against or made to pay in enjoying this water project,” he said.
Responding, the traditional ruler of
Ezenomi autonomous community, Eze Herbert Akalugwu (Ezurumee 1) said
that since inception, no organisation had done what NAS did in the
community, adding that all projects in the community had been done
through self-help efforts.
He said the choice of water project in
the area was timely, saying, “This is because when there is potable
water, 85 per cent of the human ailments is solved.”
