THE Edo State Police Command has
arrested four suspected armed robbers on Sapele Road in the Ikpoba-Okha
Local Government Area of the state.
The suspects were arrested along the
Golf Club road, Benin, after they dispossessed a bank customer of the
sum of N1.5m in November.
The state Commissioner of Police, Mr.
Chris Ezike, who made the disclosure while parading over 50 suspects,
including 35 suspected cultists, at the command on Monday, said two of
the suspected robbers, Anuke Godwin and Baboo Henry, had trailed their
victim from one of the banks in the area, where they attacked and
dispossessed him of the said amount at about 12 noon.
He said they, however, ran out of luck
when a policeman, who witnessed the incident, called for reinforcement,
which led to their arrest after a hot pursuit.
“Interrogation of the arrested suspects
yielded fruits as two more suspects were arrested, namely: Benjamin
Aaron (28) and Oba Oduaron (40) from their hideout in Ewu Village,
Ughelli, Delta State.
“Investigation is in progress, as
suspects have confessed to the crime and other escapades. These same
suspects have operated in Benin City previously, where one of their
victims was shot dead,” Ezike added.
Items recovered from the gang included
two AK-47 rifles, marked 196030732 and 1999AGC0015, 131 rounds of AK-47
ammunition, six AK-47 rifle magazines and one Kia vehicle marked LSR 468
GM.
On the ill-fated Igarra robbery of
November 3, Ezike said four of the hoodlums were in the operation while
“the identities of the runaway criminals are gradually being profiled.
The security agency is still on the trail of one Arikpo Nwagbara, in
connection with the kidnap of the late Prof. Paul Erie of the Ambrose
Alli University, Ekpoma.
The police commissioner also noted that
the command had arrested a total of 52 suspected armed robbers and
kidnappers from October 20 to December 9, 2015.
He said, “As at today (Monday), one
suspect, by name Arikpo Nwagbara, is at large. Iyator Felix, who was
recently arrested, is in custody and under investigation.
“He (Felix) will soon be charged. I
advise Arikpo Nwagbara to report himself to any police station, as he
can only run for some time, but cannot hide.”
