Information Technology giant, CISCO
Systems Incorporated, Nigeria, has formed a partnership with the
Department of Electrical and Information Engineering of Covenant
University, Ota, Ogun State. The partnership, tagged ‘Covenant
University/CISCO Academy Instructors Training,’ will afford the members
of staff and students of the department an opportunity to be trained on
technology skills.
The partnership was declared open by the Dean of the university’s College of Engineering, Professor John Ndueso.
Also, the institution’s Director of the
Vision 10:2022 initiative, Professor Christian Bolu, who is also the
coordinator of the partnership, said the university would incorporate
CISCO programmes into its curriculum.
He said, “We want our students,
particularly those in sciences and engineering, to be certified at least
to the Associate Level of CISCO. Therefore, to do that, we are training
many of our faculty and members of staff so that we can take care of
this huge number of students. We also want to train those in Electrical
and Information Engineering and Computer Engineering to the Professional
Level, but this will be done by our own staff and faculty, not by
someone else,” he said.
He noted that all the participants were
already certified as either CISCO Associates or Professionals, but said
they needed to know how to teach it.
On the benefits of the training, Bolu
said, “This means we will have staff who are in touch with the industry.
Our students would become employable because they are being exposed to
the skills that are required by the industry today.
“Also, our curriculum would become much
more robust and very attractive to the engineering students, and of
course, it’s also a major Internally Generated Revenue component for us
in Covenant University.”
Meanwhile, CISCO has presented its audit
report on ICT Network and Internet Infrastructure at Covenant
University to the university management. Presenting the audit report
carried out in conjunction with Softcom Limited on Monday, January 18,
2016, CISCO Systems Engineer, Mr. Timi Amao, noted that the audit was
carried out on wireless and network infrastructures in the university.
CU management said this was part of its
continuous efforts to ensure that the institution’s ICT infrastructure
was in line with what obtains in other world-class institutions.
