The management of the Obafemi Awolowo University Ile Ife, Osun State, has closed down the institution indefinitely.
This followed continued protest by the students over poor living condition on the campus.
However, the Public Relations Officer of
the university, Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju, when contacted on the telephone
told our correspondent that the management did not close the school but
gave the students a mid-semester break.
The students had on Monday staged a protest against the poor condition which led to the blockage of the institution’s main gate.
They decried the infrastructural decay
in the university, which according to them, include overcrowding of the
hostels and lecture rooms, inadequate water supply and epileptic supply
of electricity on the campus.
The President of the OAU Students’
Union, Omotayo Akande, had said during the protest that the students
resorted to the protest because they had exhausted all other means of
attracting the attention of the management to their plights.
He said, “The condition of living on the campus is extremely bad. There is no water, no light and the facilities are old.
“A room in Moremi Hall caught fire and
the ladies couldn’t get a fire extinguisher in the whole block. This,
among other things, corroborates our demand for proper hostel
facilities.”
However, the SU president could not be reached to comment on the closure of the university.
