The management of the Tai Solarin
University of Education Ijagun, Ogun State, says it will confer an
honorary doctoral degree of Political Science on former President
Olusegun Obasanjo.
The Vice-Chancellor of the institution,
Oluyemisi Obilade, made this known when members of the university’s
Governing Council visited the former President in Abeokuta on Sunday.
According to Obildae, the award is to thank the former president under whose tenure the university was licensed in 2005.
Obilade added that the offer was a
unanimous decision of members of the council who acted on the
recommendation of the Senate of the university.
Accepting the honour, Obasanjo said,
“TASUED has a glorious history of existence and I am happy to associate
with the university. I almost took a decision that I would not accept
doctoral degrees from any university, but if I can take honorary degrees
from universities in Moscow and Beijing, then I can’t resist that of
TASUED.”
“The man that the university is named
after was a foremost educationist, who gave his very best to education
in Nigeria. I therefore congratulate TASUED. I plan to attend the
convocation, but when I come to your university, I will walk around and
see how far you have gone.”
Meanwhile, Obilade said that the
university had invested in livestock and block making in order to
increase its internally generated revenue.
She said, “Apart from the herd of cow,
the institution also has a block-making industry, where we produce
quality blocks. We used the blocks in the construction of the recent
buildings we are putting up here on the campus. We are also open to
selling these blocks to outsiders who want them.”
The VC spoke while briefing journalists about the institution’s forthcoming convocation.
While noting that the institution has
placed priority on vocational education, she advised stakeholders in the
sector to de-emphasise policies which produce only white-collar job
seekers.
